Earl’s Court: Private Residential Spa
Breccia marble templated and crafted in Italy, gold leaf and glass mosaic lining, installed piece by piece in a private residential spa in Earl's Court, London
A Bespoke Shape That Could Not Be Guessed
The pool at the centre of this private spa in Earl’s Court is not a standard shape. The curved form of the structure meant the Breccia marble could not simply be cut to size in a workshop and delivered to site. Every curve, every transition, every stepped edge had its own geometry. An Italian marble company came to London specifically to template the pool on site, taking precise measurements before any stone was cut. The templates went back to Italy, the marble was cut and finished to each individual piece, and then shipped to the UK for installation.
That process removes most of the margin for error during installation but it does not remove all of it. Tile in Progress installed the Breccia marble piece by piece, working from the templates to ensure every joint, every curve and every surface sat exactly as it had been designed to. Breccia marble is a naturally dramatic material. The dark ground and bold veining in brown, grey and cream carry the room without additional decoration. But it is unforgiving. On a surface that will be touched and sat on, consistent joints and no lippage across every curve are not optional. The setting out had to be right before a single piece went down and it had to stay right to the last.
Two Materials, One Space, No Compromises
The pool surround and the stepped approach to the pool were clad entirely in Breccia marble, its curved edges shaped to follow the rounded geometry of the structure. The pool interior and the full-height feature wall behind it are lined entirely in gold leaf inlaid between glass mosaic tiles. When the LED cove lighting above fires across that surface, the pool interior and the wall read as a single continuous field of warm gold. That effect only works if the mosaic is laid consistently, the grout joints are clean and even across the full area, and the geometry of the mosaic lines up precisely with the curved form of the pool it follows.
The combination of the dark Breccia marble surround and the gold mosaic interior is what gives this spa its character. Two very different materials. Each one doing a specific job. The stone grounds the space and gives it weight. The mosaic lifts it and gives it warmth. Together they create a room that is considered from every angle and hard to forget. It is the kind of result that comes from understanding both materials, planning the installation before work begins, and executing it without shortcuts.
Templated in Italy, crafted in Italy, shipped to London. A project that required two countries, one pool and no margin for error.
